Understanding the future workforce

Societal trends such as emerging technologies, economic pressures, increased diversity, Brexit and most recently, the Covid-19 pandemic, will undoubtedly lead to changes to the world of work. These changes will, in turn, influence the attitudes, preferences and expectations of the future workforce. Sponsored by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), via the Human and Social Science Research Capability (HSSRC), Cranfield worked with the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), QinetiQ, Aleph Insights and 100%Open to identify how the nature of work, the workplace and the workforce is likely to change between now and 2035.

The research has found that flexibility will be very important; as employees choose where and when they work in order to balance their home and work life, and to move career paths as desired. There will be a stronger preference for meaningful work where a difference can be made for an organisation and society alongside a job that offers development and job security. For young people a high emphasis will be placed on sustainability, with employees expecting to work for an organisation that is environmentally and socially responsible.
