Paying for your research degree
Please see the other headings on this page and our website about the various ways you can fund your research degree.
Please note that, for some research degrees, there may be additional costs (known as bench fees, or additional fee elements) of up to £10,000 per annum, which will be explained during the application process.
Tuition fee deposits
All taught and research courses require a deposit, unless evidence of sponsorship from an organisation accepted by Cranfield can be provided.
Fee status – home or overseas fees?
The status of the fees you pay are determined with reference to the UK Government regulations. As a guiding principle, UK or Irish nationals who are ordinarily resident in either the UK or Republic of Ireland pay ‘Home’ fees. All other students (including those from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) pay ‘Overseas’ fees.
Bursaries and scholarships
There are various bursaries for high quality applicants. These may be available depending on your choice of course, your academic record, your country or your gender – there are several funding streams that may apply to you.

Loans
There are several kinds of finance loans available. These are open to different groups of students and have varying loan limits and interest rates. Examples include:
Prodigy Finance Loan Schemes
Prodigy Finance provides funding for full-time master’s students from the Cranfield School of Management with loans to cover up to 80% of the cost of attendance. They are also able to provide funding for MBA students through contributions from the University, alumni and friends of the School of Management.
Lendwise Postgraduate Student Loan
Loans of between £5,000 and £100,000 to cover tuition fees and maintenance.
Student Finance England Postgraduate Loan
Student Finance England loans up to £12,471 for master’s courses and £29,390 for doctoral courses to help with course fees and living costs.
Budget guidelines
Here are some guide monthly costs for single students:
Accommodation: £570-£1,320
Food: £300-£400
General expenses such as leisure, telephone, laundry and clothing: £300-£400
Travel: £60-£85
Total: £1,230-£2,205
